Doubling the Davis Conference Center

$9M Bond in the Works
(KCPW News) For businesses looking to host a large meeting between Salt Lake City and Ogden, the Davis Conference Center in Layton is the only game in town. As a result, that 3-year-old facility is operating at near-capacity and turning business away:"Since January 2004, we've lost 42 groups because of lack of exhibit space or meeting space," says Barbara Riddle, head of the Davis County Convention and Visitor's Bureau. "The economic impact of those groups is approximately $5 million."
Davis County Commissioners this week made the first step in approving a 9-million dollar bond to nearly double the size of the conference center to about 60,000 square feet. It would then be comparable to the Dixie Center in St. George and the Grand America Hotel conference facilities.
The bond for the expansion would be paid back with hotel-taxes collected in Davis County. This week's action opens a 30-day public comment period on the project, which Commissioner Carol Page says was part of the plan since the building was first built.
