Utah Lawmaker Asks Congress to Reject NCLB

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) The most outspoken opponent of federal education mandates in Utah is State Senate Candidate Margaret Dayton. During her time in the House of Representatives, she led the pushback against No Child Left Behind, arguing that it is under-funded and violates states rights. When the act comes up for renewal in the next year, the Utah State Board of Education is suggesting that Congress reauthorize it, but with major changes. Dayton disagrees.

"I think the state board is much more optimistic than I am, because I don't see that law, with all of it's regulatory burdens being livable."

Dayton will urge Utah's congressional delegation to reject No Child Left Behind. During a legislative interim committee Wednesday she will solicit additional input from her legislative colleagues on the reauthorization process.

Hear Representative Margaret Dayton live on KCPW's Midday Metro Tuesday morning at ten.
