Local Minutemen Steer Clear of National Group

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) Supporters of the national Minuteman group spearheading border patrol efforts are beginning to wonder where all of their donations have gone. The Washington Times reports criticism over thousands of dollars the National Minuteman Civil Defense Corps has funneled to a Virginia-based charity headed by conservative commentator Alan Keyes. That's one reason Utah's minutemen have opted to stay clear of the national group.

"We decided to stay independent because the issues we deal with are considerably different than the issues the minutemen on the border deal with," says Utah Minuteman Project organizer Alex Segura.

The local immigration group has raised only a few hundred dollars to cover printing and demonstration costs since it was founded in 2005. The project's unwillingness to affiliate with the national group has caused some tension. During a stint at the border in October, Segura says reception from the national organizers was chilly.

"We were spending hundreds of dollars and a lot of time to go down there and we got pushed aside by national organizers like we were irrelevant. We just didn't feel the squeezy-kissy type feeling we felt we should have had."

Rather than raising money to patrol the border, Segura says the Utah Minuteman Project are focused on fielding legislative candidates and organizing an immigration caucus that will support tougher laws for undocumented workers in Utah. During the 2007 legislative session, Segura promises bills that will attempt to revoke in-state tuition and driving privileges from undocumented workers.

The Minuteman Project is an independent immigration law enforcement advocacy group headquartered in California. It is not affiliated with Chris Simcox's Minuteman Civil Defense Corps in Arizona(aka MCDC).

The Utah Minutemen are welcome to join the combined efforts of The Minuteman Project, The Texas Minutemen, and Glenn Spencer's American Patrol from Sept 11 - Nov. 7 on the Texas border for The Minuteman Project's "Operation U.S. Sovereignty".

All independent organizations are welcome to join forces to conduct observation and reporting activities.

Alex is and always has been welcome at the border as a registered MM, as well as any other individual or local organization that has registered and agrees to abide by the Standand Operating Procedures (SOP).

Independent organizations or individuals that do not register, get an independent background check, get trained and abide by the SOP cannot particpate. This is and continues to be the poilicy of Minuteman Civil Defense Corps and it is necessary to run safe and effective national border operations with thousands of volunteers.

No orgnaization that is independent from the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps has run any national border operations.

We believe independent groups should be allowed to join us and keep their independent status. They raise donations and keep their donations which MCDC has been unable to provide for it's chapters. This has been stated by several MCDC chapters leaders in Texas.
