SLC Mayor Announces Decision During Climate Change Speech

(KCPW News) At the end of a town hall meeting on climate change at the City Library Friday evening, Rocky Anderson announced he would not be seeking a third term as mayor of Salt Lake City. Anderson says he plans to "spend his remaining days" working on grassroots advocacy in the areas of human rights and global warming.

Concluding a town hall meeting devoted to one of his favorite personal causes -- global warming -- Anderson spent 10 minutes outlining the accomplishments of his past six years in office, thanking those staffers who helped him along the way, and taking a few no-name swipes at those city council members who did not.

Anderson has been cagey about seeking a third term, but his announcement Friday evening left little doubt that the next 17 months in office would be his last:

"Although it saddens me in many ways, I have decided I will not seek a third term as Salt Lake City Mayor," an emotional Anderson declared. "I've made this decision because I want to spend my remaining days working on grassroots advocacy and organizing in the areas of human rights and global warming."
