"Rare Harmony" on New Capitol Hill Development

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) Last (Tuesday) night was a "rare moment of harmony" according to Capitol Hill Community Council Chair Peter Von Sivers. Residents largely applaud the City Council's decision to rezone a plot of land for a new housing and retail development.

"Everyone is very happy that it's finally finished and it promises to be a very nice urban anchor for the Capitol Hill neighborhood," said Von Sivers.

Howa Capitol is planning a mix of condos, town homes, small shops and a mid-sized grocery store on the land around 6th North and 3rd West. The grocery store is particularly exciting to residents, says Von Sivers.

"Traditionally Capitol Hill has been a very mixed neighborhood. It's not only single families who don't want things to change much. But 300 West is a place of small businesses and many renters. The constitutency has changed. People have a much stronger, much more demanding urban outlook. They want to be closer to the amenities of downtown."

The council voted unanimously to approve the new residential-mixed zoning necessary for the development. Howa hopes to start construction in October, with the first condos and town homes available next fall.

I'm always leery of HOWA (just look at how "great" his buildings on Main Street look) but I'm hopeful this development will breath some much-needed life into west Capitol Hill. That'd be a great place for a small supermarket- on the way home to Davis County or for people that live in the area.
