Youth Soccer Complex Irks Enviromental Group

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) ReAL Salt Lake is dominating soccer talk with its stadium plans, but another soccer deal is stirring some controversy of its own. The proposed 200-acre soccer and baseball field complex in North Salt Lake was initiated through a 15-million dollar voter-approved bond in 2003.

But environmentalists are upset that it will be built on the banks of the Jordan River - an area they say is too sensitive to support parking lots, lights and crowds. A spokesman for the complex - to which ReAL owner Dave Checketts has promised seven million dollars - says the design will include space for habitat preservation along the river. More funding and design details are expected in the next month.
