Corroon Welcomes Legion Convention

SLC Mayor Conspicuously Absent

(KCPW News) When an American Legion Convention comes to town, the mayor of the host city is usually invited to give the official welcome. But Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson was snubbed for the honor because he is refusing to roll out the welcome mat for President George W. Bush. Instead, the American Legion called on County Mayor Peter Corroon to do the honors:

"Welcome, welcome, welcome!" said Corroon. "It's my honor to give you the official welcome to our wonderful home: Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County and the state of Utah."

Corroon offered a non-controversial five-minute speech, following comments from Utah's governor and congressional delegation. He did, however, make mention of a protest against President Bush and the Iraq War set for Wednesday:

"Regardless if you're a Democrat or Republican, if you support the war or oppose it, it's our duty and honor to support our troops," said Corroon.

Mayor Anderson is scheduled to be a featured speaker at an anti-war protest Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the City and County building. Activist Cindy Sheehan will not be attending due to health problems.

President George W. Bush is expected to speak to the convention Thursday morning and KCPW will carry the speech live.
