Legion Rallies to Support Troops

Unusual Move Inspired by Rocky Anderson's Protests

(KCPW News) The American Legion always supports the troops, but rarely do they feel the urge to hold a public rally about it. That is, unless the mayor of the host city for their convention is sponsoring anti-war protests:

"In Salt Lake City today, there will be a number of protests and rallies," said American Legion Public Relations Director Joe March. " We too are going to exercise our First Amendment rights to send a loud clear signal to our troops standing in harm's way, that American stands four-square behind you."

March kicked off what may be the first-ever rally legionnaires have held to support the troops during their annual convention. Hundreds of veterans in uniform filled the plaza in front of the Salt Palace.

American Legion National Commander Tom Bock read from a resolution expressing support for the war on terror and decried protests for the affect they have on the troops.

"You cannot separate the war from the warrior," said Bock. "Similar to the 1960s and 1970s. We had people back then who thought they could separate the war. Well it didn't work."

Bock also read a statement from Tony and Amy Galvez, parents of fallen Marine Corporal Adam Galvez, calling on Americans to present a quote "united front" on the Iraq War, or risk emboldening the enemy.
