No Surprises: Lawmakers Pass Both Measures, Huntsman Pleased

(KCPW News) A Special Session of the Utah legislature yesterday went pretty much according to script. Lawmakers passed two tax-related measures. KCPW's Julie Rose has this wrap-up:
Governor Huntsman got exactly what he wanted out of yesterday's special session. With a solid majority, state lawmakers passed both an income tax cut and made it likely that many Utahns will see a hike in their sales taxes yesterday.
Taxpayers will have the choice of paying a flat income tax rate of just over 5 percent or sticking with the old system, adjusted slightly. The result is an average cut for taxpayers of about 67 dollars.
The other measure gives counties the ability to raise their sales taxes to pay for transportation and public transit. Utah and Salt Lake Counties plan to have the question on their November ballots. Taken together, the two measures mean the average Salt Lake County taxpayer will come out with about 10 dollars extra in his pocket.
