Guv Hurries to Sign Bills

None by KCPW

(KCPW News)Less than 24 hours after lawmakers passed the measures, Governor Huntsman put pen to paper and made them law. The income tax reform bill is of particular important to Huntsman, since he campaigned on the promise of a lower rate for Utahns.

Taxpayers will now have the choice to pay a flat 5-point-3 percent tax with no deductions, or pay with the old bracket system - adjusted for inflation. Huntsman has vowed he will work towards a purely flat tax in Utah.

Skeptics doubt lawmakers will be willing to continue the fight. Many lawmakers say it will be the Governor's job to keep tax reform alive on Capitol Hill. Two lawmakers that chair the legislature's tax committee say they've already begun plans for the next phase of income tax reform.
