County Council Takes on Open Space in North SL

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) The Salt Lake County Council Tuesday may pass a resolution that could foil North Salt Lake's development plans for 80 acres of land technically part of Salt Lake City.

County Council Chair Cort Ashton drafted the resolution, which declares the county's intention to hold on to the disputed land and oppose any efforts to rezone it for development. He says it is a portion of the Bonneville Shoreline worthy of preservation as open space.

North Salt Lake has taken Salt Lake City to court, saying it should be able to develop the land since it owns the acreage, though it's technically within Salt Lake City's borders. If Ashton's resolution passed the County Council, it could stand in the way of North Salt Lake's plans, even if it wins the lawsuit against Salt Lake City.

I am the Planning & Zoning Administrator for Clearfield City and I agree with Salt Lake City, preserve the open space. Just because No. Salt Lake owns the property, they still have to follow Salt Lake's zoning regulations just like any other developer. That shoreline trail needs to stay open to the public. Their are too many cities that want to close off these types of areas to the public. This is criminal, cities are suppose to

be for all of the people, not a select few with money. Keep it open.

I'm sorry to say that Kent isn't armed with the all the facts in this case. For the shoreline trail to be opened to the public, in the best manner, a trailhead needs to be built. Otherwise, the existing land will be destroyed by well-meaning, visitors without a place to park. Davis County has taken a good first step by donating unused trail, and if NSL is allowed to develop we will hav our trailhead. No trailhead means the open space will, ultimately, be destroyed. If it is all zoned as open space then we don't get a trail head.
