More Money for Utah Students?

State Board of Ed poised to ask Legislature for $170 million increase

The state Board of Education will soon ask legislators to increase the amount of money spent on the education of each student in Utah's public schools. The Board is seeking a 10 percent increase, which would amount to more than 170 million dollars. Officials say the bulk of that money would go to increasing teacher pay.

Associate Superintendent Patrick Ogden says such raises are necessary for Utah to remain competitive. Right now, he says, the state is losing teachers to Wyoming, Nevada and California.

And, he adds, the money is there. If only lawmakers allow schools to use it.
