College Enrollment Down in Utah

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) Enrollment in Utah colleges this year is down just over one percent.

Commission of Higher Education spokesperson Amanda Covington says the reasons could range from higher tuition costs to a strong economy, which motivates people to work rather than go to school. Either way, she says it's a problem because newer jobs in the workforce require college degrees.

Dixie State enrollment fell sixteen percent. The College of Eastern Utah, Slat Lake Community College, Utah State and the U of U saw smaller drops.

It could also be due to the high dropout rate amongst our Hispanic students...and then debating the possibility of doing away with the instate tuition for them.

Dixie State did have a rather dramatic tuition hike this year since it has forgone those for the last couple of years. It couldn't keep passing them up.

However, the school is still a bargain.
