SL County Council To Consider Terror Task Force
None by KCPW
(KCPW News 10-31-06) The Salt Lake County may not be a top target for terrorist activity, but the Sheriff's office is working with the FBI to track terror-related activities that may cross into Utah's border. County Investigations Captain Jim Potter explains:"Terrorism is fed by numerous criminal enterprises around the country, and the idea is to tap into those and follow the money," says Potter. "So it's not like they're out chasing terrorists that exist right here in Utah. It's part of a national effort of which we're a very small piece of it."
The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office and the FBI established the Joint Terrorism Task force shortly after 9-11 and each year county officials must re-approve the relationship. The County Council will consider the request today. Potter says only one investigator from the Sheriff's office is currently assigned to the task force, but could not comment on investigations underway.
