County Mayor Unveils Budget Proposal

(KCPW News 10-31-06) Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon is proposing what he calls a "simple" and "flat" budget. It does not raise taxes, but includes a plan to build three new libraries and two senior centers in Utah. It gives county employees a 2 percent cost of living increase. And it expands the recycling program for the sanitation district. County CFO Darrin Casper says its all possible because of a booming economy:"We had very robust sales tax revenues, and they have allowed to do some one-time spending," says Casper.
Sales tax revenues are up 18 and a half percent over last year. Casper says the county's low unemployment rate is a major factor. Corroon's budget proposes to spend some of the extra money on deferred maintenance projects at the county's parks and rec facilities. He is also asking the County Council to create two new positions in his office and several new law enforcement jobs. But once again, Corroon denied the Sheriff's request to open the Oxbow Jail.
