Navajos Reelect President for First Time

(KCPW News 11/08/06) Although it was mid-term elections in the United States, the Navajo Nation voted for president in their election yesterday. Joe Shirley, Jr., became the first Navajo president to win re-election:

"I appreciate their vote of confidence; I think that's what it is. Of course, we worked the past four years very hard, very diligently, we persevered. We feel that we made humongous strides on behalf of the Navajo Nation," says Shirley, who added, "I think that's what they saw and that's how they voted, and I just really appreciate the vote of confidence from the People."

With 65 percent voter turnout, Shirley overcame challenger Lynda Lovejoy with 53.5 percent of the vote. The final tally with 110 chapters reporting was 34,813 votes for the Shirley-Shelly ticket to 30,214 votes for the Lovejoy-Phelps ticket.
