Congressman Matheson On Rumsfeld Resignation

Democrat Says Resignation Is The Correct Move

Utah Congressman Jim Matheson says he's not surprised at today's news that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has resigned. Matheson says Rumsfeld's record in underestimating the needs of U.S. troops in Iraq, and his conversations with soldiers who served in Iraq led him to the conclusion that it was time for a change at the Pentagon.

Matheson adds he's a little surprised at the timing of the move - coming just one day after Democrats took control of the House of Representatives, but agrees the move is the proper one.

President Bush has nominated former CIA chief Robert Gates to take Rumsfeld's position. Matheson says, whoever takes the job, he'd like to see someone who has a fresh approach to the situation in Iraq.
