'Congestion Tolling' One Possible Solution to Transportation Needs

Utah Taxpayers Association Makes Case
(KCPW News 11/14/06) The Utah Department of Transportation projects that it will need $16 billion over the next 25 years for road projects. Congestion tolling is being floated as a possible solution to that funding crisis:"For example, during rush-hour the toll would be higher," says Mike Jerman, vice president of the pro-business group Utah Taxpayers Association, "and then during off-peak hours, which would be weekends, early morning, late afternoon or even in between the commutes, would be little or zero toll."
Unlike other forms of tolls, congestion tolling, says Jerman, is designed to change the driving habits of commuters: "whether it's more car pooling, more telecommuting, living closer to work, taking the bus, other things, leaving earlier or later for work."
If implemented, congestion tolling can be a way to forestall the massive tax increases the Utah Taxpayers Association otherwise predicts will be necessary to pay for road projects. To hear Jerman talk about congestion tolling, download today's Midday Metro podcast.
