Bennett Skeptical of Fourth Seat for Utah

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) As Utah lawmakers and Governor Jon Huntsman barrel forward with maps for a new fourth congressional seat, Senator Bob Bennett presents a less-optimistic view.

"I'm not one who thinks this is a done deal," says Bennett. "I think it's frankly quite problematic, and given the way things work around here, it may very well not happen."

Bennett says time constraints are the biggest threat to a bill that would give Utah a fourth seat and Washington D.C. it's first in Congress. The House and Senate will convene for a lame-duck session during the first few weeks of December.

The Utah Legislature is moving ahead with a map to realign its district boundaries and Governor Huntsman plans to call a special session to approve the map sometime the week after Thanksgiving.

But Bennett points out that even with unanimous support from Utah's congressional delegation, there are myriad details that could snag the plan in Washington.
