Recounts Likely in Handful of Races
(KCPW News) The final ballots in Salt Lake County are now being counted, in preparation for results to be certified Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. The count is being closely watched by both parties."We want to see that its working well, given the new system," says Democratic State Party Executive Director Todd Taylor. "Secondarily, we are watching because the Republicans are watching. We don't want them alleging things that we will know for a fact aren't happening."
Democratic State Party Executive Director Todd Taylor says his party has six candidates likely to request a recount as soon as the results are in. The Salt Lake County Clerk's office is now running about 9,000 outstanding ballots through optical scan machines.
The highest profile races likely to be recounted are Salt Lake County Auditor where incumbent Republican Sean Thomas leads Jeff Hatch by 344 votes, and House Speaker Greg Curtis who has just 46 votes on Democrat Jay Seegmiller. Any race within a margin of one vote per precinct qualifies for a recount.
