Effort to Name Street After Fallen Soldier Hits Roadblock

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) Karl Malone, Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks have Salt Lake streets named after them. But a troop of Boy Scouts has hit a roadblock trying to get a stretch of 300 South named after the first Salt Lake soldier to die in the Iraq conflict.

Marine Corporal Adam Galvez played Little League near the road the scouts hope to name "Adam Galvez Street." But the city council is resisting and now the Mayor's office and planning division are both urging the city to hold off on approving the request until the rules for honorary street naming can be clarified.

They are considering a proposal to limit street naming honors to historical figures and events or school mascots. The scouts have collected signatures from every resident on the street and have unanimous support from the community council for Adam Galvez Street.

"We went back and look at the paper work for the Karl Malone street renaming, and you can see that everyone was tripping over themselves at city hall to get that done," says Scoutmaster Michael Clara. "And now that we want to honor a 21-year old Marine from our own community, now there's a problem that the mayor's office wants to point out. And we feel that's very disingenuous."

The Salt Lake City Council will hear a briefing on the proposal tonight.

I agree with Michael Clara's observation. Why was there not an urgency to better clarify the "rules" as they related to past proposals such as streets named after Karl Malone and John Stockton? I don't quite see how the mayor's office or anyone else can defend their requests to delay the current proposals. Adam Galvez was truly a dedicated citizen of this city.

If the City Council approves the street renaming. The cost of the new street signs will be paid by the Boy Scout Troop. If you would like to help with the cost. Please go to the following link:http://www.healingfield.org/staticpages/index.php/AdamGalves
