Re-Thinking Redistricting

None by Bryan Schott

Should Legislators Control The Process?

Utah's lawmakers are asking for public comment on redistricting maps that will be in effect if Utah gains a 4th seat in Congress. Just like in 2000, the process is controlled by Republicans in Utah's legislature.

Some have called for an independent redistricting commission to set boundaries, but lawmakers have killed those proposals in the past. Kirk Jowers, Director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah, tells KCPW's Bryan Schott the process is tainted because, right now, lawmakers can choose their own constituents.
