Expect Special Session Monday, Dec. 4th

(KCPW News 11/28/06) Lawmakers conclude public hearings this evening on three map proposals, one of which they'll choose in anticipation of Utah getting a fourth seat in the U.S House of Representatives. Senator Curtis Bramble, chair of the redistricting committee, says "Map J" is getting the most support:

"The 2nd District would be essentially the north or northwest half of Salt Lake County; it would take in all of Morgan County, it would take is a small portion of north Salt Lake, and it would take in Park City proper. Snyderville Basin, both north and south, would be in the 3rd District, which would wrap around, go down through Utah County and go down essentially the eastern half of the state. The new 4th district would take the southeast portion of Salt Lake County and come down the northwest portion of the state down to Washington County. And then the 1st District would be Box Elder, Cache, Rich, Davis and Weber Counties."

The Redistricting Committee will reconvene tomorrow morning on Utah's Capital Hill to finalize and forward a specific proposal to the full legislature. Bramble says a special session to pick a redistricting map is likely next week:

"The governor has indicated, and the Senate president and [House] speaker have indicated, the most likely time for a special session to approve a redistricted map would be Monday, December 4, at 10 o' clock."

Dave has it right. There is enough dividing Salt Lake City. It should not be divided into different districts when making the new map.
