"Plan L" Drafted After Public Comment
(KCPW News) After two days of public hearings on three different maps to divide the state into 4 Congressional Districts, Utah lawmakers today settled on a brand new map crafted last night by both sides of the aisle. The new proposal, dubbed "Map L" puts most of Salt Lake County in the Second Congressional district along with the Snyderville Basin and Park City. The Southern part of Salt Lake County is moved into the Third district. The First District encompasses most of Northern Utah, while the new Fourth district covers the Western part of the state.
Lawmakers bristled at critics who said the process was designed to gerrymander safe Republican districts and further sideline Democrats.
The committee voted 10-1 in favor of the new map as the preferred proposal for the Legislature to consider during a special session next week.
