Governor Visited Iraq, Is On Way to Afghanistan

(KCPW News) A little matter of several thousand miles and umpteen time zones will not deter Utah Governor John Huntsman from calling a legislative special session for next week, even though he's currently in the Middle East.

Governor's spokesman Mike Mower says Huntsman probably will issue the special session call Thursday, so lawmakers can ratify a plan to divide the state into four congressional districts.

He says the map approved by the Redistricting Committee Wednesday in many ways mirrors the original plan proposed by the governor.

When the special session begins Monday at 10 a.m., the governor likely will be jet-lagged from his Department Of Defense-sponsored trip to the Middle East.

Mower says the governor visited Baghdad, and the cities of Balad and Tikrit while in Iraq. Later this week he will visit Utah troops serving in Afghanistan and then will travel to Germany to see injured Utah servicemembers.

Huntsman will return home this weekend.
