Only Constitution Party Gets Enough Votes To Automatically Qualify For 2008
Only one third political party in Utah got enough votes in the 2006 election to automatically qualify for the ballot in 2008 - the Constitution Party. The Libertarian, Desert Greens and Personal Choice party did get enough support for ballot access next time around.Desert Greens spokesperson Deanna Taylor says they're disappointed they lost ballot access, but it's all part of building for the future.
In order to qualify for the ballot in 2008, those parties need to collect 2,000 signatures on a petition. This process is not new to the Desert Green party, which had to petition onto the 2006 ballot.
The Constitution Party kept their ballot access primarily through the strong showing of their candidate in the 3rd Congressional District, Jim Noorlander. He grabbed nearly 11 percent in that race.
