Creative Solutions Required for Future Water Needs

Water conservation experts say that Utah must use creativity to meet the state's future water needs.

"We feel that the days of cheap supply-side solutions are really over. It's time for water planners, politicians to start thinking creatively about meeting our future water needs. There's a lot options out there, which are cost effective and they are also not harmful."

Mark Danenhauer of the Utah Rivers Council, says options like transferring agricultural water to urban use and water reuse are more doable than building new dams or pipelines:

"The Bear River project, the Lake Powell project are very, very expensive projects if you look at the costs to develop that per acre foot, especially if you compare that with say water conservation. Water conservation comes in at nearly one third the cost per acre foot."

From 2 to 5 p.m. tomorrow at the City Library, the URC along with Colorado-based Western Resource Advocates, will release a report on Wasatch Front water use.
