Dept. of Corrections Slapped with Allegations of Favoritism, Mismanagement

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) According to a legislative audit released yesterday, the Utah Department of Corrections is plagued with favoritism, lack of oversight, sloppy record keeping and inadequate officer training.

The department's Executive Director Scott Carver agrees with the audit's recommendation that his department needs to keep better records and improve its handling of disciplinary actions and investigations. But he says claims of favoritism are a staff perception, rather than a reality.

The audit was motivated by calls legislators received from disgruntled Corrections employees. Legislative leaders say they are troubled by the findings and have asked for a follow-up audit of the Department of Corrections in one year to monitor improvements.
