Study Details Growing Shortage
(KCPW News) Low salaries and over-crowded classrooms have caused a dwindling interest in teaching among Utah's college students. A report released today by the Utah System of Higher Education shows the number of schoolteachers graduating from colleges is staying flat while Utah's child population grows rapidly.Researcher David Sperry says more retirees and high turnover are compounding the shortage. Last year, Utah had a shortage of nearly 1,400 teachers. A state task force appointed to address the gap will use the report to formulate recommendations due out in March.
