Confusion Over Legislative Seat Causes Delays

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) The 57th session of the Utah Legislature is just ten days away, but some preparations are on hold while Republican officials scramble to replace retiring Representative Jeff Alexander.

Utah House Republican Chief of Staff Chris Bleak says whoever replaces the former House Majority Leader will have to work quickly to catch up to his colleagues in filing bills and learning the ropes. Delegates from Alexander's district narrowed the list of candidates for the spot to two this week, only to discover they should have chosen a single person.

It's now unclear who among Republican leadership will make the final decision. The confusion has delayed printing for the official legislative guide. But Bleak says the House Speaker has gone ahead with committee and seating assignments:

"We had a little bit an advantage of knowing Rep. Alexander was retiring, so we were able to put the person in positions tha probably would not have been Alexander's," says Bleak. "Rep. Alexander was here for 16 years, so he would have sat on the back row. Typically freshmen sit up towards the front."

Alexander's replacement will not only sit on the front row with other freshman legislators, but also serve on committees that vet transportation, workforce and community development issues.
