Huntsman To Make Education Priority In '07

None by Eric Ray

(KCPW News) Governor Jon Huntsman Junior says making sure Utah children master the key pillars of literacy by the third grade is just one of his goals for 2007. Last night Huntsman delivered the State of the State address, during which he asked for $7.5 million for extended day kindergarten classes.

Huntsman's education budget calls for 18.2 percent in new funding. That funding includes a 9 percent salary increase for teachers and $25 million dollars in one-time bonuses to be spread amongst Utah's teachers.

Another of Huntsman's education goals is to reduce classroom sizes. Huntsman proposes no more than 20 students per teacher for kindergarten through the third grade.
