Tax Cut Plan Advances

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) The first major tax cut proposal of the legislative session is on its way to further debate. Today a House Committee approved a plan to cut 250-million dollars in taxes, including a lower income tax rate and a full removal of the state sales tax on food.

Democrats on the committee complained the bill is too big to rush through so early in the session. Sponsoring Representative John Dougall says the proposal is a framework for discussion. It follows the lead of Governor Huntsman in lowering the flat income tax rate to about five percent, but goes a step further by also dropping the rest of the state's sales tax on food to more than double the impact on state revenues.

Senate Republicans say they will not support any more reduction of the state sales tax on food and expect to block the measure.
