Giving Parents More Time to Oppose School Closures

None by KCPW

KCPW News) The heart-wrenching decision to close a handful of schools in the Granite School District last year inspired a new proposal by State Senator Pat Jones. She is hoping to require districts to give 10-days notice before scheduling a meeting to discuss school closures or boundary changes. The current requirement is only 24-hours advance notice.

"When parents oppose a school closure, it takes a little more than a day to muster their troops," says Jones.

Jones hopes giving parents more time to organize will calm some of the tension over school closure issues. The State PTA and School Boards Association support the measure. It was approved in Senate committee today.
