Time Key to Winning Past Wars
(KCPW News) Republican members of Utah's congressional delegation are supportive of last night's State of the Union address by President George Bush, who dedicated much of his speech to the war in Iraq. Utah senior senator Orrin Hatch supports the president's troop surge, and is willing to give it time to succeed. He says time was the deciding factor in past wars and it will be again:"When we went into Normandy in the second World War, we had all kinds of battle plans that didn't work out - our troops got surrounded at the Battle of the Bulge, a lot of things didn't work out, but we just kept going at it and finally we stopped what would have been the most terrible thing in the history of the world, and that is the Hitler-Nazi regime. We have got to win here, or we're going to have all these terrorists over here in America - and we do have some here now - but thus far, because we're taking it to them over there, it's much more difficult for them to cause havoc here."
Meanwhile, Democrats in Congress are preparing non-binding resolutions opposing the troop surge. Hatch takes issue with the move:
"Well I think it's deplorable that they would do this at this particular time because it undermines our troops," Hatch says. "But you know, there is some sincerity, they feel that way, and they're likely to pass it, but it's just a sense of the Senate resolution. If they really meant something, they would cut off the funds. And they don't dare do that," he adds.
