Meth Use Among Females On The Rise

Women of child bearing age are a growing demographic among meth users. According to experts from the Salt Lake County Division of Substance Abuse, most women addicted to meth began using due to relationship pressures. With its promise of more energy and easy weight loss, it's seductive.Tim Whalen, Associate Director of the County's Substance Abuse Division, says 42 percent of all female drug related treatment admissions at county facilities are meth related. Overall, meth admissions in the County have grown from 8.1 percent in 1995 to more than 30 percent last year.
According to DSA spokesman Boyd Bastian, women now account for nearly one-third of admissions to rehab compared with just 18 percent in the early 90s.
Both Whalen and Bastian will take part in the Second Annual Methamphetamine Conference to be held in Salt Lake City from February 1st through 3rd.
