School Board Elections Could Become Partisan
None by KCPW
(KCPW News) State officials are hoping to turn school board elections into partisan races. Utah Senators are nearly unanimous in their support of a measure to let political parties - rather than non-partisan commissions - choose candidates for the ballot at the state and local school board level. The change could mean more expensive - and more contentious - school board races. But Senator Curt Bramble says getting political parties involved will lead to more candidates of a higher caliber. In the 2006 election, half of State Board of Education candidates ran uncontested. Governor Huntsman's office says he likes the idea, even though it means taking away his current power to decide which State Board candidates end up on the ballot.
