UVSC on It's Way to UVU

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) Utah Valley State College has a reputation as a way station for thousands of students filling "general ed" requirements on their way to a four-year degree somewhere else. Utah lawmakers and UVSC officials hope to change that with a ten-million dollar gift to the school that will help add graduate programs and boost the number of full-time faculty on staff.

The money will get UVSC over the summit of its request to become a Utah Valley University. Some lawmakers worry it will turn UVSC into a carbon copy of other state universities - losing its focus on two-year degrees and its appeal to undergraduate students.

UVSC Student Body President Andrew Stone says students want the school to be a university so it will look better on their transcripts. A Senate committee approved the proposal, but it could be weeks before lawmakers decide if they can afford the 10-million dollar price tag.

UVSC hasn't been a "way station" for students finishing their degree someplace else for sometime now. That might have been the mid-1990s UVSC, but not anymore. A cursory search on Google will produce a dearth of positive highlights: most Utah Valley students attend UVSC, that UVSC graduates start at a higher salary, and that it is one of the few schools in the state with increasing enrollment in a time of double-digit tuition increases. Anyone who has been affiliated with the school knows it has been operating as a university in all but name only and this legislative bill is the last and inevitable step.
