Log Cabin Republicans Leader In Utah
To the casual observer, the Log Cabin Republicans seem like an oxymoron. Members of that group are Republican Party loyalists who happen to be gay and lesbian. Given the focus by some in the party on social issues surrounding gays and lesbians, many outsiders wonder why the group stays loyal to the party.It's not hard, according to the group's new leader, Patrick Sammon. Sammon is new President of the group. He's in Salt Lake City for a Log Cabin Republicans leadership retreat. He tells KCPW's Bryan Schott that, despite some who focus on the social issues, he sees big changes ahead for Republicans.

There's really no intrinsic connection between sexual orientation and political belief. There's no rule that says Gay people have to be liberal Democrats any more than Straight people have to be conservative Republicans. Personally, I have always tended to be pretty liberal on social issues, but I find as I grow older I am becoming more conservative when it comes of economic and "law and order" issues. I have Gay friends who are liberal, conservative, and everything in between. Likewise when it comes to religion, most of my Gay friends are Christian, some are Jewish, some are agnostic/atheist, and a few are self-described "pagans." There's just no connection between a person's sexual orientation and his political or religious beliefs; it's invariably OTHER people who make this an issue.

When people are more interested in self-gratification then they are the facts based in the natural order and the reproductive function of the human male and female, they are at the least intentionally deceiving themselves, more importantly they are specifically intent upon the deception of every one else in hopes of gaining support for their emotional instability. Unfortunately our society is so soft in its complacency and excesses that it has forgotten the hard work, blood lost, and sacrifices made by those who came before us in an effort to insure a nation safe from moral depravation, and democratic social regression. Although it is hard to hear myself make an argument along such lines, but I tend to wonder if America would not benefit from a serious venture into social suffering (war on our soil, massive disease, a police action from the government against the people, etc) as a reminder of the requirements to establish and maintain a unified nation with a single-minded and properly focused people.

I'm glad someone is fighting the good fight from inside the Republican party...I couldn't do it myself, but I'm glad Patrick and his fellow Log Cabins are working so hard!
