Healthcare Not a "Right" in Utah

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) Basic, affordable health care is not a right Utah lawmakers are willing to include in the state constitution. A committee of senators yesterday defeated a proposal to that effect, saying it smacks of socialism.

Sponsoring Senator Scott McCoy believes they misunderstand his intent. Rather than require the State to provide health care for all, McCoy says he meant the constitutional amendment to force lawmakers to find a comprehensive solution to the problem. Lawmakers say they are tackling the growing concern of uninsured Utahns with a series of task forces studying health care plans being implemented in Massachusetts and California.
