(KCPW News) Utah Valley State College will no longer be the stopping-off point for students hoping to get a bigger, better four-year degree elsewhere. KCPW's Julie Rose reports:
It's official - Utah Valley State College will become a four-year university in July of 2008. The change has been years in the making, but UVSC President William Sederburg says the transition will now happen a year ahead of schedule, thanks to a strong budget surplus and support from the Senate President in sponsoring the bill.
Utah lawmakers in both the House and Senate approved the change unanimously, but agreed to only eight of the ten million dollars UVSC officials need for the transition. Sederburg says they'll be back next year asking for two million to plug the gap. The money allows UVSC to offer a limited number of master's degrees and increase the number of full-time faculty. It also means students in Utah County unable to get into BYU will have a state-run option.
