State Board of Ed Calls for Vetoes

(KCPW News) Governor Huntsman's phones are ringing with requests to sign or veto various bills. Yesterday the State Board of Education voted unanimously to call for a veto on two controversial measures. KCPW's Julie Rose reports:
The Utah State School Board is joining the ranks of those asking the Governor to veto controversial measures known as the Ritalin Bill and the Gay Clubs Bill. Board members voted unanimously to call for a veto on the measures, saying they both address issues already written into state board rules.
Governor Jon Huntsman Junior has said he's inclined to sign House Bill 202 - or the Ritalin Bill -- to appease parents who worry teachers overstep their bounds in recommending medication for students with behavioral problems.
The so-called Gay Clubs Bill establishes rules for creating and supervising school clubs. The State Board believes that's its job.
The board also wants Huntsman to veto House Bill 393, which requires school districts to list the exact cost taxpayers could expect from a proposed bond. The board fears such precision is unfeasible and will open up schools to lawsuits. Huntsman has until March 20th to sign or veto all bills.
