Gov Quietly Signs Bills on Gay Clubs and Ritalin

(KCPW News) Governor Huntsman quietly signed the so-called "Gay Clubs Bill" late Friday afternoon. Spokesman Mike Mower says the Governor would have vetoed prior versions of the bill, "but this legislation simply codifies items already in the State Board of Education rules and makes clear that it is not targeting any one club or organization."Instead, House Bill 236 establishes a list of rules all student clubs must follow, and empowers a school district to disband a club that does not comply. It was originally created to prohibit gay and lesbian support groups from meeting as official school clubs. The State School Board asked Huntsman to veto the measure. But Mower says the Governor liked the bill because it requires parental permission for a child to participate in a school club.
Huntsman also signed the so-called "Ritalin Bill," which the State School Board and many local medical professionals hoped he would veto.

As a gay adult and growing up knowing I was gay, I could have desperately used a gay/straight alliance club. It would have helped with deep depression thinking I was the only person out there.
If this club was available it would have helped me tremendously, but if I had to get parental permission to do so, I never would have gone.
Despite the availability of that resource, I have now been in a committed relationship for almost 27 years and we are raising a child.
I think House Bill 236 destroys the purpose of allowing teens to find out more information about themselves before they confront their parents. It adds undo pressure at a time when most teens already have too much to handle. It is truly unfortunate.

Tracy Green, your comment is patently offensive. To suggest that a gay/straight alliance is similar to any of the ridiculous "clubs" you mention is an example of bigotry beyond belief.
I encourage you to educate yourself about the condition of homosexuality. If you did, you would learn that it is not something that parents, or anyone else, can "control." It is the way things are.
I'd imagine it's also a pretty lonely situation, especially for a teenager. To create a space for teenagers to feel welcome isn't, or rather, shouldn't be, a crime.
I'm astounded at the level of ignorance from which some people are confident to spout their hateful rhetoric.

Let's let them join the Nazi Club, the school shooters club, the I want to murder my parents club. Why should parents need to give permission to students to join clubs? It is not like everryone says that parents should control their teens and be responsible for their actions when things go wrong. Hold parents responsible, but don't give them any means to control the child. That sounds like a plan that will work.
