County Approves Emigration Canyon Trail Plan

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) A vote by the Salt Lake County Council yesterday was the culmination of several years of public meetings and tense debates. The topic? Hiking and biking trails. KCPW's Julie Rose reports:

Salt Lake County's long-term plan for Emigration Canyon now includes a trail along the north slope of the canyon within sight of many expensive homes.

The Emigration Canyon planning commission and community council both oppose the trail, but the Salt Lake County Council gave the plan near unanimous approval yesterday. Residents say the trail would violate their privacy, be a safety hazard and hurt their property values.

Councilman Randy Horiuchi was the only member of the council to oppose the master plan because he worries a trail system would increase traffic and other pressures on Emigration Canyon residents.

The master plan also recommends a trailhead and parking lot at Perkins Flat, which has been purchased for open space preservation.

Before any of the trail projects are constructed, the County Council will have to allocate funding and conduct environmental impact studies.
