Bus Route Angst on East Bench

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) Neighborhood Councils along Salt Lake's east bench have joined forces to oppose impending changes to UTA bus routes. The changes will mean residents in that area will no longer be able to catch one bus to downtown Salt Lake City. Instead, they'll have to catch a bus to the nearest TRAX station and transfer:

"Based on personal experience that would take approximately 35 minutes to go 2.2 miles," says Robin Carbaugh chairs the transportation committee for the Yalecrest Neighborhood Council.

"To go from bus to TRAX in that short travel distance would be extraordinary for a rider," adds Carbaugh.

She says the proposed bus changes will make transit useless for most residents of her neighborhood. West-side residents, bus riders with disabilities and even students at the University of Utah are organizing to stop the proposed route changes.

UTA officials say the alterations are intended to make the system more efficient along bus routes with the most riders. The changes are scheduled to take effect on April 8th.

I am 57 years old and have been on disability for 2 years and have now been released for full time work. I need bus transportation . I have found myself so limited in what I can apply for because the routes are so restricted or even eliminated from Sandy to downtown or anywhere north. Can any new routes be considered? One around 9 am inbound not express and one around 530 or 6 outbound would be so helpful. Sincerely, Launa Taylor
