New Transportation Commissioners Good for Transit?
None by KCPW
(KCPW News) Governor Huntsman has nominated two new people to join the seven-member Utah Transportation Commission. And at least one of them is good news to the Sierra Club, which is pushing for mass transit alternatives to the proposed Mountain View Corridor. The Sierra Club's Marc Heileson says former State Democratic Party Chair Meg Holbrook has traditionally supported bus and TRAX proposals over standard road projects.Huntsman has also nominated long-time Legacy Parkway proponent Stuart Adams, to join the commission. The Sierra Club opposed many of Adams' positions on Legacy, but Heileson says the former State Representative was ultimately helped negotiate a compromise.
Still, Heileson worries the two new commissioners will not be able head off a conflict of "Legacy"-proportions over the new Mountain View Corridor. He says current plans for Mountain View call for an eight-lane interstate with no plans to add coordinating mass transit for at least 23 years.
