Bravado Holding Up Funding for Iraq War

Cannon Says Republicans Will Defeat Democrats on Timetable Issue

(KCPW News) Third District Congressman Chris Cannon says bravado is playing a large part in the current standoff between Democrats and the Bush Administration over funding for the Iraq war:

"We will fund our troops in Iraq. There's been a lot of bravado in Congress, I think mostly for show. The president may end up vetoing a bill, and then there will be some testiness in the second round," Cannon says, "but we will get funding for our troops on time."

Democrats want a 2008 troop withdrawal date in the House version of the more than $120 billion war funding bill, which President Bush says he will veto. Congressman Cannon says Republican opposition to such timetables will be vindicated:

"We're saying how can you tell them when we're going to leave. Because then they, the opposition - and that's a lot of groups in Iraq - will focus their whole lives around that departure time, and then chaos will emerge. I think we have an obligation to help that country become stable," he adds.
