Mayor Pushes for Zoning to Save Sugarhouse Businesses
None by KCPW
(KCPW News) Shopkeepers in the eclectic Sugarhouse Business District are grasping for options that will let them stay in the neighborhood, despite impending redevelopment. For his part, Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson is pushing for zoning laws that could help, but says it's in the City Council's hands:"I think down Broadway Boulevard, 15th and 15th, 9th and 9th, certain areas of Sugarhouse, we should by zoning have some restrictions on the big boxes, chain stores and category killers," says Anderson. "So that we preserve the local, more identifiable, charming businesses."
Sugarhouse business owners on the southwest corner of 21st South and Highland Drive have already received eviction notices, and property owners say rent is sure to be higher in the new development. Since landowners have not submitted plans to the city for approval, it may not be too late for the City Council to enact the Mayor's proposed zoning ordinance. However, the City Council has already refused to revisit zoning for Sugarhouse at least once.

I agree with Mayor Anderson. As I've traveled around the US and abroad, it is always the areas with locally owned businesses that draw my interest. Sugar House has developed into a wonderful eclectic business center. It would be sad to see the big boxers it take over making it yet another one of those homogenized shopping centers that riddle this nation.
