More Opposition to This Is the Place Lease Plan

None by KCPW

(KCPW News) Opposition is piling up against a proposal to lease twelve acres of open space at This Is the Place Heritage Park for an office building. Last night the Salt Lake City Council unanimously approved a resolution against the lease and urged the park's board of directors to find other revenue options.

"Open space is so valuable in our community, and in locations like this where it's so accessible to our neighborhoods," said Councilman Soren Simonsen. "It's great to see this level of commitment from the city council."

The resolution is a joint message from the City Council and Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson, who reportedly organized an emergency meeting on the matter this week with elected officials and park managers. The State Parks Board will hold a public hearing on the proposal tomorrow night at seven, and then will meet Friday morning at 8:30 to make a decision. Both meetings will take place at the State Department of Natural Resources (1594 W. North Temple).
