Midday Utah begins after the 9 a.m. news

U.S. commitment to nuclear dominance has a long history that my guest, Joseph Gerson, says is not only counter productive, but spurs weapons proliferation. He writes about that history and the need to abolition all such weapons in his new book titled Empire and the Bomb: How the U.S. Uses Nuclear Weapons to Dominate the World. Joseph Gerson is the Director of the Peace and Economic Securities Program at the American Friends Service Committee in New England, and holds a Ph.D. in Politics and International Security Studies. His books also include The Sun Never Sets: Confronting the Network of Foreign U.S. Military Bases.

A leaked draft of changes to the Endangered Species Act indicate that the nation's bedrock environmental law could be weakened by changing - not the law itself - but the regulations that implement it. To speak about the details and consequences of such actions is Paul Larmer, Executive Director of the High Country News.
