Mining Cos Go Extra Mile for Environment

(KCPW News) At least five mining companies are doing more than just extracting ore from Utah land."We try to go above and beyond to do projects that will improve the environment in the areas that we're mining," says Chris Hansen, environmental coordinator for the parent company of the Skyline Mine near Scofield and Sufco Mine near Salina, Utah.
Skyline Mine runs an annual weed abatement program to get rid of invasive musk thistle on public land around the mine. Workers at Sufco Mine haul water to troughs for wildlife and grazing cattle in the Manti-La Sal national forest. The two mines were honored by the Utah Board of Oil, Gas and Mining today for going beyond the required regulations for environmental protection.
Other 2007 Earth Day Award recipients include C.W. Mining Company, Dumont Nickel, Simplot Phosphate and Trout Unlimited, which cleaned up an abandoned mine in American Fork Canyon.
